Ryan Reynolds is Hilarious in Video Gamer Infused Rom Com Free Guy

Hollywood loves to revisit ‘The Groundhog Day’  or time loop premise.  We saw it last year with Andy Samberg in ‘Palm Springs’ and over the years with films like ‘Doctor Strange,’ ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ and more.  However, we have never scene a time loop film that operates strictly from a video game vantage point.  Enter Ryan Reynolds.

Reynolds has really found his cinematic niche playing the lovable, clueless dude who somehow finds love and triumphs in the end.  With Free Guy, he is literally a bank teller named Guy.  At some point, Guy discovers t he’s actually an NPC (non-playable character) inside a brutal, open video game world…Free City.  Free City has everything he could ever need or ask for.  As Guy prepares to hit the same route, to the same bank in the same blue shirt and khaki’s – he greets his fish and himself with the same greeting.  “Don’t have a good day…have a great day.”

You begin to notice that something is not quite right as he ignores the chaos around him.  Yet, he begins to realize and wonder what would happen if he gave a different coffee order, or made a run for it when the robbers hit the bank?  After snatching the robbers glasses, he finds himself inside the video and life begins to look very different and so does his outlook on life.

The graphics, CGI and Gif’s are bananas with a fire soundtrack that features such hits as Miley Cyrus’ ‘Wrecking Ball’ and Mariah Carey’s ‘Fantasy.‘ There are some hilarious and fun cameos from Channing Tatum, GMA’s Lara Spencer, Chris Evans, the late Alex Trebeck and Taika Waititi playing the crazed, villainous Antwan, who wants Guy destroyed.

Nerdy, geeky, gamers are going to lose their minds when they see this film as it encompasses everything about the world’s they inhabit on a daily basis.. One of the funniest moment is when Tatum rants and raves with his Mom while playing the game.  It truly was hysterical and reminded me of the many moments my Mom walks in during a virtual interview or conference.

What is super cool about Free Guy is that we root for an NPC to find love and triumph instead of shooting them dead, which is a gamer nerd dream.  Jodie Comer is having a hell of a year with two hit films, including the impending Ben Affleck film ‘ The Last Duel.’  Her scenes and chemistry with Reynolds is so sweet and endearing that you literally are rooting for them to hook up.  The slow motion scene of them flying through the air is one of my favorite things to watch!  Free Guy is fluffy , fun, corny and just what the doctored ordered after a year of stress, trauma, drama and a film that the entire family can watch, laugh and just have some good old-fashioned fun. Produced 20th Century Studios, you can catch it in theaters now.
