Hathaway and Galitzine Sizzle in The Idea of You

Love is a tricky emotion. It heightened euphoria takes on a life of its own making those involved feel invincable and untouchable. Older men and younger women seem to the be acceptable relationship norm. You can literally be an 80 year-old man with a 24 year-old woman and no one will say a word. Yet, when it is a woman no matter what the age, the amount of vitriolic comments and judgement that swoop in are massively unfair by comparison.
When Solene (Anne Hathaway), a beautiful single 40 year-old single mom begins an unexpected affair with and the lead singer (Nicholas Galitzine)of the hottest boy band on the planet August Moon, both of their lives shift for the better and the worse.
With remnants of Notting Hill, Indecent Proposal, real life drama with Harry Styles and Olivia Wilde and based on the Robinne Lee novel of the same name, Hathaway and Galitzine’s chemistry is crazy hot further proving that the old adage of age being nothing but a number is real and vibrant in their case. Love doesn’t choose age or race, the heart wants what it wants and sometimes those desires come with real consequences.
What I love most about this film is that as easy as it is to get swept up into the fantasy of it all, director Michael Showalter and screenwriter Lee bring us back down to earth with Solène choosing her daugher’s happiness over her own. I particularly loved that the couple didn’t initially end on a happily ever after note and are revisited after some time and distance.
Hell, this film has this vibrant woman over here rethink my cougar tendencies. Would a date a 24 year-old probably not. However, The Idea of You has me mulling over the possibilities for the not so distant future.
Currently streaming on Prime Video, this film certainly proves as a cautionary tale in more ways than one.
