Jerry Seinfeld’s Unfrosted is Comical Yet Odd

Who doesn’t have a love affair with Pop Tarts? That yummy toaster treat with the variety of warm fruit flavor fillings is a childhood staple for me. Listen…if I’m being honest, I can still get down with a nice pack of Cherry Pop Tarts. So, when Netflix announced a film based on the bidding wars of Post vs Kellogg for the race to create a pastry that will change the face of breakfast forever directed by and starring comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld – I simply could not wait!
Is this a true story? Sort of. Unfrosted is “based on a “true story” in the sense that yes, there there actual was a race between the two rival breakfast companies, Kellogg and Post, to make a marketable breakfast pastries in the early 1960s. But nearly all other details in the movie are made up. Even tough the story is actually interesting about the evolution of Pop Tarts, it is executed in a very odd way that takes a minute to get to the point. With scenes including white kids eating of of dumpsters and then having those same kids serve as mini consultants just feels a little off brand.
Every comedic meteor on the planet is featured with everyone ranging from the Oscar nominated Melissa McCarthy to stand-up comic Earthquake, it is Amy Schumer who stands out from the pack. Schumer as Post cereal corporation owner Margie Post looked fantabulous and was giving Cruella-ish vibes with Max Greenfield serving as her whipping boy.
Jerry Seinfeld in his directorial debut does a great job, but his script doesn’t really gel until the film picks up steam midway through. Now streaming on Netflix, Unfrosted is good for a few laughs here and there, but if you are looking for more substance than that, it doesn’t exist.
