Fonda and Redford Reunited for Our Souls at Night

One of my fondest childhood memories was watching Robert Redford and Jane Fonda late night on television in Barefoot in the Park.  They seemed like an on-screen match made in heaven.  Needless to say, I was right.

Nearly 50 years later, the two reunited for the Netflix drama, Our Souls at Night about two widowers who find comfort with each other during their twilight years.  Addie Moore (Jane Fonda) and Louis Walters (Robert Redford) have lived next to each for years and have little to no connection.  All that changes when Addie pays Louis a visit with a proposition.

This film warmed my heart and made me strangely emotional. Why?  It was a painful reminder of how our society seems to think that sexual attraction doesn’t apply to people of a certain age. Or, how complicated a relationship with a parent and child now that the children are adults. Or, how intimacy doesn’t necessarily mean the physical act of sex, but rather being intimate with one’s feelings. Or, dealing with the whispers of neighbors assuming and gossiping about something or someone that is literally none of their business.

Our Souls At Night

The quiet intensity of these two screen legends remind you why they individually and collectively have stood the test of time.  Addie and Louis remind us that life doesn’t end when you get older.  Getting older is just another opportunity to create a different type of lasting memory.  A memory that transcends the night into the next morning.

Our Souls at Night can currently be streamed on Netflix.
