Chicks Led By Fantabulous Margot Robbie Are Kicking A$$ in Birds of Prey

I am loving the DC Universe for spotlighting their female comic book characters like Wonder Woman and now Margot Robbie in Warner Brothers’ Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of the One Harley Quinn.

When we last saw Harley and her “puddin” Joker, they were thick as thieves in Suicide Squad, but now the tables have turned.  On the rebound, my girl is  determined to let Joker know she’s just fine and what better way to get that message across than by blowing up their “spot.”

However, once it becomes known my girl is no longer protected by Joker and on the run, it’s open season on Harley from anybody and everybody – especially Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Female empowerment is large and in charge with Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez), Helena Bertinelli aka The Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Dinah Lance aka Black Canary (Jurnee Smolett) aka Birds of Prey as they kick butt and take names.

Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) is the diamond pick-pocketing impetus that brings all the chicks together and becomes Harley’s ride or die sidekick in the process.  Ewan McGregor is hysterically vain and a little scary all at the same time. The stunts are action sequences are insane with one involving Robbie doing a back flip onto the top of a car in roller skates.   I was there for ALL. OF. IT!!!!

Winstead’s “Huntress” seems to be having an identity crisis and extremely annoyed at the fact no one seems to take her serious.  Smolett’s Black Canary is giving me a combo of Uma Thurman from Kill Bill and Jim Kelly from Bruce Lee’s international hit Enter The Dragon with a splash of humility and a conscience.

Robbie’s breaking the fourth wall from time to time adds to the comic book laced humor infused throughout from Harley’s pet hyena to even a slight joke about Bernie Sanders. Birds of Prey  – and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn is delightful, delicious fun and a comic book female empowerment at its best with not only a stellar cast, but with a screenplay Christina Hodson and direction by Cathy Yan.
