Lee and Moura are Two Strong Reasons to Stream The Last House on Netflix

Imagine starting your day with a little breakfast, getting dressed, double checking and gathering items you need for the day, when you attempt to exit your dwelling the door appears sealed jammed.  However, it’s not jammed, it’sealed and so are all the windows.  It’s a feeling most of us are familiar with thanks to being quarantined inside our homes for nearly three years. Well, imagine not going outside at all for nearly five years?The post-apocalyptic premise seems to be all the rage during the summer 2026 with films like The End of Oak Street and The Dog Stars.

Directed by Louis Leterrier,  The Last House centers around a family of four appearing to be sealed inside by a mysterious, invisible force amidst a torrential downpour of rain outside.  At first it’s all fun and games and then the realization sets in that this new reality may indeed be permanent. Watching Harrison Ford in “Air Force One” and the delightful musical about a little red-haired orphan named “Annie,” are near daily forms of entertainment – other than each other.

Then, the discovery of who or what has been trapping them inside – a octopus reminiscent of characters out of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise.  One would think four people could take out this entity and get on with their lives, yet it’s a little more challenging than one would think.  Is the premise far fetched pitched by Matthew Robinson’s screenplay?  Not really.  Remember how animals took over whole streets and neighborhoods during the pandemic?  In my area alone, we saw racoons, possums, coyotes and wildcats to name a few.

Regardless of how we got the premise giving Bird Box and A Quiet Place vibeit simply does not work without a strong cast.  The audience will be invested by this cast led by the amazingly gifted Greta Lee and Oscar nominee Wagner Moura. The amount of skill endured and displayed via swimming, fights, etc… proves that if one has strength and the will to survive, hope and optimism will surely follow. Lee and Moura’s chemistry is undeniable and it the what is spoken with just their eyes that lingers when words have failed them.  I need them in another film like yesterday!

Pacing is a little funky,  but, with a running time of 1 hour and 52 minutes, audiences can handle it.The House is now streaming on Netflix.
