13 Days of Halloween – A Nightmare of Elm Street

NightmareElmStreet

I thought I would keep with Wes Craven theme for a minute and talk about the one film that put him on the horror map…Nightmare on Elm Street, where a dead child rapist haunts the children of the parents who murdered him, stalking and killing them in their dreams.

Now y’all know I am NOT the horror film chick fan, so I will just share some little known facts I discovered in my research process.  BTW…What I do know is that it had several sequels – 5 to be exact

  • Billy Bob Thornton and Steve Buscemi were considered to play Freddy Krueger.
  • This will be the first “Nightmare” movie that won’t star Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger. Englund has played Freddy in every movie, including Freddy vs. Jason and the TV series Freddy’s Nightmares
  • Johnny Depp accompanied his friend Jackie Earle Haley to auditions for A Nightmare on Elm Street. Instead of Haley being chosen for a role, it was Depp who was spotted by director Wes Craven, who asked him if he would like to read for a part. Depp got a part in that film, Haley didn’t, but Haley would go on to play Freddy in this remake 26 years later.
  • Ronee Blakley starred in Nashville, which garbed her an Academy Award Nomination for Best Supporting Actress, then starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street playing Nancy’s mother in the original. Coincidentally, Connie Britton starred in A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) playing Nancy’s mother and then went on to star in the TV version of Nashville for she was then nominated for an Emmy. Also, both Ronee and Connie play the same self destructing country superstar in their versions of Nashville.

Here is the original trailer for Nightmare On Elm Street…
