Time Out of Mind

How many times have you walked past a homeless person or been in your car at a light and seen someone holding a sign for spare change?  Having lived in both New York and Los Angeles, I know I have seen them more times than I can count. However, I always wonder what happened in their life that they are now in this position?

Did they lose their job, home, family?  Were they veterans or mentally ill people who have been displaced?  You will never know unless you take the time to find out.

In Time Out of Mind, George (Richard Gere) seems to have no idea how or why he is homeless. One gets the sense that some sort of major mental trauma made him check out of real life and hit the streets.  Thanks to his annoying buddy at the shelter Dixon (Ben Vereen) we discover that George has a daughter who could possibly assist, but when he reaches out she wants nothing to do with him.

One would think picturing the fine as wine Richard Gere  as a homeless man would be a stretch right?  Well, as a testament to his acting skills,  in Time Out of Mind he makes us believe.  Gere is almost unrecognizable as George and he makes your heart bleed for this man who is clearly in alot of pain, anguished and confused.

Ben Vereen as Dixon lights up the screen from the moment he arrives and brings some much needed comic relief to a very heavy film.

The supporting cast is very strong and includes Brian d’arcy James, Colman Domingo, Kyra Sedgwick, Steve Buscemi, Danielle Brooks, Jeremy Strong and Michael Kenneth Williams.

With a very successful run of the film festival circuit most of 2015, “Time Out of Mind” will be available via Netflix this December and VOD.
