#TBF Higher Learning

HigherLearning(1).jpgWith so much talk this week about Oscars and lack of diversity there was a time when things started to look up for black people in behind and in front of the camera.  Spike Lee made folks sit up and notice, but it was a homegrown Southern Californian that would push the envelope a step further .

John Singleton was like a shiny, new penny in Hollywood when he burst onto the scene as the director of Boyz in the Hood, which, garnered him an Oscar nomination.  Most of his characters were from South Central L.A. and were depicting a life that most Americans were not familiar with in other parts of the country.

Singleton jump-started the careers and introduced us to Cuba Gooding, Jr., Nia Long, Morris Chestnut, Ice-Cue, Regina King, Tupuc Shakur and so many more…

Later this year, Singleton is slated to direct a feature film on Tupac Shakur, who starred alongside a young Janet Jackson in Poetic Justice, in June of this year.

However, it was Higher Learning that put Michael Rapport, Kristy Swanson, Tyra Banks and pre-Oscar winning Jennifer Connolly in a drama that made us all question the knowledge.

Let’s question the knowledge one more time and go back to college with Higher Learning
