SXSW: CREEDE, U.S.A.

Mandy Patinkin, star of stage and screen mostly known for his roles in “Evita” and Sunday in the Park with George” on Broadway and the iconic films “Princess Bride” and “Yentl.”  Who knew he was cutting his thespian teeth in Creede, Colorado and a membe of the Creede Repertory Theatre.

For generations, Creede’s residents have held tightly to their heritage and values. But when the town brought in a theater company to revitalize the economy, the citizens were introduced to new ideas and perspectives which created an ongoing tension between tradition and change.

Nearly 60 years and countless performances later, Creede, U.S.A. is a stunning microcosm of America’s national divisions. Issues like guns in classrooms and gender pronouns spark tense debates, yet the town remains bound by a shared sense of place, community and theatre.

Through intimate portraits, charged town meetings, and a rich historical lens, this educationally, heart-tugging doc explores how this evolving community continues to find common ground – both inside and outside of the mining shafts, ranches and the Creede Repertory Theatre.

Directed by Kahane Corn Cooperman, this documentary is frighteningly on par with the drama encompassing our country at the moment.  What is heartwarming to watch is how these residents conduct themselves and gently respect their differences while protecting their piece.  We could all learn a thing or two from the residents of Creede about amicably agreeing to disagree.

This little theatre camp in the mountains nestled within a mining town is proof arts are vital to society. For, it is through arts, music, theatre and film that brings people together.  It doesn’t matter what you look like or who you are or who you voted for arts brings humanity to a space where we can all laugh together
