Stories We Tell Is Perfect Love Letter to Loved One

Every family has a secret. Most spend their lives trying to hide it, ignore it or pretend it never existed.  Why?  They are ashamed or trying to protect the loved ones involved in the so-called scandal.  However, what happens when the secret is divulged?  Some are happy.  Some are relieved.  Some are mortified and others wish it would just go away.  What ever the circumstances are…everyone has their own version of what happened, how or why it occurred and why it should be out in the open or not.

All this and more is what we witness in the documentary “Stories We Tell” by first-time Writer/Director Sarah Polley and narrated by Sarah’s Dad…Michael.

You see, after the untimely death of Sarah’s mother Diane, the family would jest regarding the real identity of Sarah’s father.  This joke went on for  years and led Sarah on a journey to Toronto.  Even Sarah couldn’t have written the ending to her story.

Apparently, Diane was a very charismatic character who was loved by many and kept just as many secrets.

“Stories We Tell” teaches us that when a beloved person leaves this realm many things are left behind.  Beloved memories, secrets and the ability to still affect those left behind with events set into motion while the deceased was still on earth.  We also get a first row seat to how all of this brings the Polley family closer together instead of tearing them apart.

It is a lovely tribute to Diane Polley, her life and her family.  Diane, of all people, would’ve loved it just as we loved learning about her in this heartwarming documentary.

“Stories We Tell” and Sarah Polley received her first nomination by the Directors Guild of America for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a Documentary.  The winner will be announced on January 25th at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
