Review: The Hundred Foot Journey

MV5BMTQ3Mjg2MTE4M15BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwMzcyNDMwMjE@._V1._SX96_SY140_Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg met more than 20 years ago when he cast her in her only Oscar nominated role to date…Sophia in The Color Purple.  This was before Spielberg was considered the iconic director he has become or before Oprah was recognizable by only her first name and an encouraging icon around the world.

Today, they are co-producers of The Hundred-Foot Journey starring Dame Helen Mirren.  Adapted from the International Best-Selling novel by Richard C. Morais, this journey can teach us all a lesson about life, love, career and racism.  With the climate being so volatile in Ferguson, MO and abroad, we are taught that food can sometimes bring the gap when it comes to cultural differences.

The Kadam family, after losing their matriarch, move to France for a fresh start.  They encounter and clash with Madame Mallory (Helen Mirren), owner of a celebrated French restaurant across the street.  Soon after the Kadam’s open their own nearby eatery, undeniable chemistry causes the Madame to take gifted young chef Hassan (Mannish Dayal) under her wing.

Recently having garnered an intense love of cooking, I was fascinated with  Hassan’s unusual mix of Indian spices and French cuisine.

The evolution and growth of Hassan, played brilliantly by Mannish Dayal in his first major leading man role, was yummy to look at and has the acting chops to back it up.  His on-screen love Margaurite (Charlotte Le Bon) is breathtakingly beautiful and makes you feel every emotion as it were you own.  Dame Helen Mirren bring her “A-game” as always, but the standout was Om Puri as the patriarch of the Kadam family.  His mixture of comedy and realism make the perfect recipe to kick this film into high gear!

The Hundred-Foot Journey shows how small a distance one has to travel for love, to live out their dream or to move to the next chapter all within a very short period of time.

This film will bring a smile to your face and make you want to go home and infuse some indian spices into your next meal, but most of all it will leave you feeling hopeful about yourself and about the world.  The Hundred Foot Journey is in theaters now.
