Review: THE DROP

the dropMystic River, Gone Baby Gone and Shutter Island are synonymously associated with the brilliant and candid writer Dennis Lehane.  A  native of Dorchester, Massachusetts, Lehane has a very keen handle on the underbelly of the gritty Boston neighborhoods he called home and are less than stellar .

In his latest and greatest, The Drop (based on the short story Animal Rescue), Lehane  trades his Boston roots for an even seedier backdrop in the form of Brooklyn, New York.

Touted as the “last performance” of the late, great James Gandolfini, this film literally had me on the edge of my seat from beginning to end.

The Drop deals with a world in Brooklyn where the law isn’t paying attention and when they aren’t…the world of crime is.  It’s like watching a modern day film noir western with cars and bars.  We become eavesdroppers on the world of Bob (Tom Hardy) and Cousin Marv (James Gandolfini) and the “drop bar” they host for the Russian kingpins of the neighborhood.

There are a variety of twists and turns, but at the end of the day you realize that you should never judge a book by it’s cover.  If you take the time to read the novel, you will discover many layers masked and the underlying emotion that bubbles to the surface and controls everything is loneliness, love and acceptance.

Tom Hardy turns in  such an eerily, stellar performance in this film along with James Gandolfini, that any words I would use to describe either one wouldn’t do them justice.  All I can say is Bravo!

The Drop opens this weekend and I say RUN to a theatre near you…like yesterday!
