Reunion for MCU’s Gugu Mbatha Raw, Wunmi Mosaku and Hiddleston in LOKI

Disney and Marvel Studios has been doing some really cool stuff by breaking off characters from their beloved and popular Avengers franchise allowing fans opportunites to witness a deep dive into the psyche of each and every one.  Earlier this year, we were reacquainted with WandaVision and now the God of Mischevious –  Loki is shooting his shot.

The starting point of the series is the moment in “Avengers: Endgame” when in 2012 Loki takes the Tesseract  ends up  in the hands of the Time Variance Authority (TVA), which is outside of the timeline, concurrent to the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe.  As a fish out of water, he desperately tries to navigate and manipulate through the Time Variance Authority for his release.  Stripped of his bravado, but ego still intact, my man is dealing with  a set of consequences he never could imagine occurring to someone of his self-proclaimed stature.  So, as the series kicks off today, it would only be appropriate to share a conversation moderated by Chris Hewitt with the cast and creatives bringing more insight to this delicious backstory into one of Marvel’ favorite villains.

You probably thought a couple of years ago that you had played Loki for the last time, then you get a phone call saying he’s going to get his own show. What goes through your mind?

TOM HIDDLESTON:  I had to scratch my head, because that scene in Avengers: Infinity War felt so final…so conclusive as the end of Loki’s story. But, I knew Avengers: Endgame was coming around the corner. That scene where Loki picks up the Tesseract and disappears in a puff of smoke it’s like where does he go? When does he go? How does he get there?  Kevin( Feige), Louis D’Esposito and Victoria Alonso  reassured me this would be the starting point of the series. So many possibilities to think about and so many brilliant ideas.   What I love about the series is that Loki is stripped of everything familiar to him. Thor is not close by. Asgard seems some distance away. The Avengers, for the time being,  aren’t in sight. He’s stripped of his status and his power.  If you take all those things he’s used to identify himself over the last six movies, what remains ? Who is he, within or outside all of those things?

Of course, we have several new characters including the gorgeous and brilliantly talented Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer and Lovecraft Country’s star Wunmi Mosaku have joined  and I am always down for the brown in ANY Marvel project.  As fate would have it, these ladies may be new to the MCU, but are not new to Tom Hiddleston as they all literally attended RADA (Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts) before reuniting in LOKI.

GUGU MBATHA-RAW:  Yeah, it’s so weird the circle of life. You know the sort of RADA reunion on this show. [LAUGH]  It’s wonderful to see your generation rise, stepping into these surreal, epic, larger-than-life worlds. You remember the same acting tutors, have walked down the same corridor, and you know, have all of these cultural references that we all had. Shooting in the pandemic, it was a real comfort to have these, long-standing relationships and friendships.

Needless to say, I gotta save a little snack for y’all!  So, stay tuned for my interview with Wunmi Mosaku  aka Hunter B-15 on this week’s episode of The Curvy Critic with Carla Renata.  In the meantime, savor this sneak peak from LOKI.
