Lupita Nyong’o is Queen of Horror with Little Monsters and US at SXSW |SXSW ’19
I know, I know. I have said numerous times that I don’t do horror and yet I have screened Hereditary, Get Out, US and Little Monsters in less than a year. Anywhoo, while at SXSW I found myself engaged in a Lupita Nyong’o double-header of US and Little Monsters. If I dare say it, just as Jordan Peele is becoming the Black Master of Macabre, Nyong’o is becoming the Black Tippi Hedren.
Let’s cut to the chase, I spent most the Little Monsters peeping through my fingers as usual because I just CAN NOT do blood, gore or zombies. What I did managed to see tickled me beyond watching Josh Gad (Teddy McGiggle) as an over-the-top ridiculous version of something resembling Mr. Rogers meets Pee Wee Herman. He was absolutely delicious!!!
Little Monsters is a horror/comedy about a deadbeat, washed up musician Uncle Dave (Alexander England), Ukulele playing kindergarten teacher Miss Caroline (Lupita Nyong’o) and a field trip to a cuddly petting zoo in Australia that changes everyone’s life as they fight off escaped zombies from a nearby military facility. Clearly, you get why I say it’s a completely crazy, absurd comedic take on zombie apocalypse .
Lupita Nyong’o singing Neil Diamond’s “The Man In Between” will melt your heart while Josh Gad’s pontificating how he studied at The Actor’s Studio while confessing to have slept with all the mother’s is pure comedy.
If Adam Sandler’s Big Daddy was married with The Walking Dead – Little Monsters would be the result. Directed by Abe Forsyth, Little Monsters is gorry, gross and bloody, but at the end of the day, horror and zombie fans will be delighted at the absurdity of it all and marvel at the vocal stylings of Nyong’o, proving that her talent is truly limitless.
