Sydney Sweeney TKO’s as Boxing Legend Christy Martin

Born in West Virginia Christy Martin (Sydney Sweeney) aka the “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” excelled in sports and attended college on a basketball scholarship. By the late 1980s, she starts fighting in “Toughwoman” contests for fun before training with boxing coach Jim Martin (Ben Foster). Their alliance would prove to be a hugely successful career in a sport primarily geared toward men by and for the male species..
Despite a 25-year age difference, Christy and Jim marry, intensifying a codependency exacerbated by drug use, financial mismanagement, and acts of physical and psychological abuse that nearly kills her.
Written and directed by by David Michôd and written by Mirrah Foulkes, Christy doesn’t shy away from the harsh side of misogyny, domestic violence and sexual identity, while doing justice to Christy’s journey being frank about the obstacles she overcame.
Ben Foster exposes the darkness driving the man who shifted from being first Christy’s champion to becoming her tormenter. His portrayal is stealth and disturbing marking the genius within his characterization whose love/admiration turned jealousy is so indicative of men who hate to see women survive and thrive. Merritt Wever as the hypocritical Christian Mom who harms more than helps her daughter through this journey is spectacular! Known for her comedic prowess laced with drama on shows like “Nurse Jackie,” Wever proves her acting arsenal is anything less than enormously vast.
However, at the heart of this film is Sydney Sweeney as the title character. Sweeney, who is unrecognizable and disappears into this role, may have just delivered the performance of a lifetime defining her career moving into this awards season. Let’s face it, this doll is on a roll between her role in the Ron Howard directed “Eden,” this film and her new season of “Euphoria, “it’s safe to say she is becoming a force to be reckoned with for 2025.
As Christy says in the film, “…some people go their whole lives without never discovering what their thing is – I found mine.” Despite the odds and being left for dead, Martin not only survived, but is now a boxing promoter and advocate for victims of domestic violence. All while embracing an authentic life with significant other Lisa Holewyne, which is a move that earlier within her career would have been seen as career suicide.
Inspirational, aspirational and a testament to the strength of the human spirit, Christy is a blueprint of what never giving up looks like in the flesh.
