Keith Knight Taps Into Real Life and Gets WOKE on Hulu
Keef Knight’s (Lamorne Morris) cartoonist career is taking off, and everybody is talking. But, once he gets harassed by some cops, everything starts talking. And when I say everything, I mean literally…EVERYTHING!!! Inspired by the life and work of artist Keith Knight, Woke is a brand new comedy series that takes an absurd, unconventional look at identity and culture following Keef this fresh outlook on the world around him. Challenged with navigating new voices and ideas that confront and question him, all without setting aflame everything he’s already built.
When I tell you I got my entire life with these characters named Keef, Clovis (T-Murph) and Gunther (Blake Anderson) and also starring Sasheer Zamata (SNL) – I kid you not. Each one with a more outrageous POV than the other while addressing an issue so raw, real and emotional in the disguised as comedy to hopefully take the rose colored glasses off the world when it comes to profiling and racism towards Black people and other people of color.
One of the funniest scenes’ but one that will leaving going hmmm is a scene between Gunther and Clovis imagined all the scenarios in which Keef’s ‘beer summit’ meeting with the cop you slammed his face into the pavement could go wrong. Every scenario ending with the multitude of ways Keef could get shot leaving you with this nagging feeling and sorrow at all the many ways young Black lives have been snuffed out (at home in bed, in the back, walking down the street with Skittles). Trust and believe – none of this is funny, but sometimes comedy can make folks see the irony of all these scenarios and how they could have and should be handled instead of with a bullet taking a life.
Woke is developed by Marshall Todd and Keith Knight. The co-creators serve as executive producers alongside showrunner Jay Dyer, Maurice “Mo” Marable, Aeysha Carr, Richie Schwartz, John Will, Will Gluck, and Eric Christian Olsen. Kate Schumaecker served as EP on the pilot. The comedy is a co-production between ABC Studios and Sony Pictures Television,Inc and available TODAY via HULU. Get WOKE people while gettin your giggle on.
