Extra’s Tanika Ray Moderates Panel for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time

The beautiful, fantabulous Tanika Ray of the NBC’s EXTRA moderated a panel with the cast of Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time and I had a from row seat to the action.

How does Ava Duvernay feel about being the $100 million dollar woman and are the young stars of the films cited about their first feature?  Find out as some excerpts are shared from the global press junket I attended for Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time.

When I saw this film, I immediately tapped into the inner child.  I was reminded about the complex, yet loving relationship with my little brother, the unwavering love for my parents and the merciless bullying I endured as a young girl that continues to this day.

“This is a film for young people. And people who are young at heart. And for me,  Did I tap into the 11-year-old, the 12-year-old, the 13-year-old in me and find that light that I used to have, that dreamer? I got to do that for two years and really get in touch with all that I thought I would be when I was young …and try to create some magic with this great group of people.” exclaimed director Ava Duvernay.

Gugu M’batha Raw played a scientist  and Mom for the first time and she thought “…it was kind of great because we got to meet this wonderful astrophysicist – Stephon Alexander, who wrote this incredible book, The Jazz of Physics.   Ava introduced us to him, we got to talk to him a little bit about what it might mean to pursue those theories…for me, I was really drawn to the fact that even though Dr. Kate and Alex Murray are obviously a love match, they’re also intellectual equals.  It’s like a meeting of minds and that’s the spark and discovering tessering…that pioneering spirit that they have is what keeps her hope alive when he’s been gone for so long.”

How is young Storm Reid  handling her newfound fame?  “I’m really excited. I think I’ll be a little bit nervous tomorrow because I feel like this is our baby…this is our thing that we created and love iso much, but we’re giving it to people for them to criticize it, for them to either like it or love it or not like it at all. So that’s a little bit nerve-wracking…I’m really proud of us so I’m really happy and it’s a blessing.”

Speaking about her legacy and specifically this film, Ava says “There’s love in every frame of this movie and there’s love in every frame of everything that I do…These films are my children…what I leave behind. They have my name on them, have my blood in them.  But this was an extraordinary experience for me. It’s emotional to sit here with all of them because we really held hands on this and became a family, trying to just give a little bit of sweetness to the world in these dark times. It’s a tough time right now. And so this film really saved me in a lot of ways from kind of going down dark holes and kept me in a really light-filled place so I’m grateful for the past few years working on A Wrinkle in Time.”

There were many other  great moments where Zach Galifianakis got a little choked up speaking about the film, Mindy Kaling shared how she met Ava Duvernay at a party with Puiltzer Prize winner Malala and Oprah paying homage to her dear friend Ava who has brought the talk show diva back to the big screen.
