Will Smith and Tom Holland Deliver Rapid Fire Fun with Spies in Disguise
I love a good spy story! In my free time, catching an old re-runs of Get Smart or ANY old James Bond 007 flick would not be out of the ordinary. So, needless to say, if there is an animated flick with spies AND a spy that is caramel colored in the form of Will Smith…I. AM.THERE!!!
Based on the short story ‘Pigeon Impossible’ by Lucas Martell, Spies in Disguise introduces us to spy extraordinaire Lance Sterling (Will Smith). Lance is smooth, suave, debonair and the ultimate man about town. His impending sidekick Walter (Tom Holland) is not. But what Walter lacks in social skills he makes up for in smarts and invention, creating awesome gadgets Lance will make use of on his epic missions.
Now, that sounds simple enough, but when Lance is unexpectedly turned into a pigeon this odd couple pairing find themselves having to rely on each other in a whole new way. When you hear the line, “I can see your face and my butt at the same time,” you know you are about to have an experience that produces a multiple of chuckles complete with gluten free breadcrumbs and meditation.
Clearly, Will Smith is the perfect choice for an animated spy. After all, he was one-half of Men In Black and his oozes charisma and Tom Holland (your favorite neighborhood Spiderman) naturally slides right into the nerd scientist role of Walter. But it is the unlikely friendship and chemistry of the characters that makes you fall in love with them along.
Spies in Disguise is a great lesson in humanity. Lance is a shallow loner and Walter is an outcast because he’s different. But, it’s those differences in their character which makes them stronger together with an entertaining and touching unlikely inspirational duo. On the flip side, Masi Oka is hysterical and quite the hypocritical life of the party as Kimura.
At a recent roundtable, I spoke with Masi about cultural appropriation and being a Digital artist.

Nick Bruno and Troy Quane outdid themselves with this one creating a world that feels more realistic than animated. Kids and adults alike will have a great time with this one. Take a listen to our roundtable discussion.
