Virtual World Comes Alive with Ready Player One

My brother and I grew up on Steven Spielberg films…Jaws, E.T. and a list of other films that is as tall as my 5’2″ frame.  Over the holidays, I bought a Star Wars VR game because I am obsessed with anything in the franchise and where else could I become ‘the force’ in the comfort of my own home??!!

Needless to say when I found out that Spielberg was adapting the book of Ready Player One by Ernest Cline for the big screen…I was all in!!!!

Ready Player One delves into the virtual reality world emphasizing that one can become anyone they choose via an avatar, suit and headgear.  The opening montage of various players becoming everything from a pole dancer to a martial arts expert provides film goers with a futuristic ideal of the journey we are about to take with Parzival (Tye Sheridan), Artemis (Olivia Cooke), Aech (Lena Waithe), Sho (Phillip Zhao) and  Daito (Win Morisaki)in their quest to secure the keys to the Oasis.

Every inch of my geekdom was shaking with enthusiasm while watching how Spielberg seamlessly weaved between the virtual characters and their real life personas.  Ready Player One is action packed and filled with traditional Spielbergism’s that any true fan would recognize from the score to the ending.

It’s kinda like a the  millennial version of Total Recall from back in the day starring Arnold Schwarznegger.  He’s a taste of that one for those of you under the age of 30:)

Every performance in the film is right on the money.  Not one weak link.  Who knew that Lena Waithe’s was such an awesome actor???!!!  I know she did her thing on Master of None (for which she made history winning an Emmy), but she is crushing here!!! Love that she give multi-hyphenate a whole new fresh face!  Olivia Cooke as Artemis breaks your heart.  She’ll give little girls a whole new reason to embrace what is unique, special and awesome.  In general, this multi-cultural cast seems to be directly reflective of our current society.

Some of the action sequences go on a little too long for my taste, but those special effects are fantabulous and worth it!

Produced by Warner Brothers Pictures, Ready Player One is in theaters NOW!!! Go get your geek on…
