Festivals – Festivals – Festivals

I’ve been off the grid for a minute…but now I’m baaaccckkkk!!!

So…you ask…Diva…where have you been?

Well…after my triumphant return from Sundance at the beginning of this year, I made my way to the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, The Indian Film Festival, Tribeca Film Festival and am now in the middle of the Los Angeles Film Festival here in Los Angeles.  In between all that Cannes Film Festival, Outfest and and the Tony Awards happened!  Whew!  I’m exhausted already and  I haven’t even begun to let y’all in on the fun!

Alrighty, let’s start with the Indian Film Festival Los Angeles held right here in Hollywood at the Arclight Cinemas.  The standouts for me were Miss India America and Dhanak (Rainbow).  MISS INDIA AMERICA reveals just how far a girl will go to her man back, as well as, how the need for perfection can cost you respect from your friends and family.  I know it sounds all deep, but it was really quite hilarious and the performances were stellar.  My “brown” people were letting us have it y’all.  Then on the completely opposite end of the spectrum was DHANAK where two little kids traveled miles in a quest to repair a physical ailment.  Their journey across the desert was exciting, fearful and inspiring.

The Cannes Film Festival was in rare form this year and the Tony Awards big winner was FUN HOME, a musical that made history when it’s all female composer team won the Tony for Best Musical Score.  One half of that brilliant team is partly responsible for me having a career on the Broadway stage – Jeanine Tesori!

Now let’s talk a little about the 2015 Los Angeles Film Festival, which ends today.  LAFF was very well-rounded this year with a little bit of everything for everyone including FREE screenings of LOVE & BASKETBALL (complete with a cast/director Q&A) and WHO FRAMED ROGER RABBIT, a pre-festival screening of DOPE (which opens in theatres thsi Friday, June 19th), as well as, their signature COFFEE TALKS, MASTER CLASSES, TRIBUTES and GRAMMY GALAS.

Now, through June 21st in Washington, D.C. the AFI DOCS FESTIVAL is in full swing featuring a few docs I had the pleasure of screening at SUNDANCE and TRIBECA  FILM FESTIVALS this years including The Black Panthers:  Vanguard of the Revolution, Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead – The National Lampoon Story, Listen To Me Marlon and Larry Kramer:  In Love and Anger.

The Black Panthers:  Vanguard of the Revolution

Listen To Me Marlon

One of the more controversial docs being screened is TYKE:  ELEPHANT OUTLAW.  Let me tell you this one broke my heart and had me in tears for a minute.  Check out my review here:
