Christine is always the smartest person in the room and desperately wants her destiny to take her beyond her local Sarasota, Florida news station.  Unfortunately, when she decides to take matters into her own hands, the results are fatal.

Christine is the true-life story of reporter Christine Chubbuck.  Chubbuck was a brilliant journalist, but an extremely troubled young woman.  Considering herself to be a much more serious journalist, Christine decides to take her producer’s advice literally when he tells her they need juicy stories, “”If it bleeds…it leads”.  Working in a male dominated field and already fighting to be heard, she becomes infamous for taking herself out online…for ratings.  The footage is so disturbing that it literally has been removed from all online sites.

A video copy of Christine’s suicide is confirmed to exist today, in the hands of station owner Robert Nelson’s widow Mollie, who has no plans to make it publicly available. The filmmakers never considered seeking it out.

Rebecca Hall, portraying this woman who looks like she will snap at any given moment is absolutely brilliant.  She masters that stare that says so much without little to no dialogue.  Hall puts you right inside the psyche of Chubbuck, which is bone-chilling.

In addition, she is hopelessly in love with her on-air co-reporter (Michael C. Hall).  When it becomes clear he can’t reciprocate her feelings, she spirals into a depression a mood swing from which she will never recover.

This film made me feel very uneasy for many days.  I kept wondering how many artistic, creative souls like Christine Chubbuck felt like they had no other choice but to take fate into their own hands knowing it would have a irreversible result.

Christine is the perfect example of when sensational journalism has gone too far.  Unfortunately, this is a lesson that will never be learned or accepted with the onset of social media and sites that stream news nearly around the clock.  This has become a media driven society based on who can get the news out there first…not accurately.

Christine Chubbuck would be mortified…I’m sure.

Debuting at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, Christine was released domestically this fall and is now playing nationwide.  To find out where  you can screen this film please CLICK HERE.
