Marvel is literally the only studio in Hollywood that has a billion dollar franchise release without one single detail eeking out about the film…22 of them to be exact over a ten or eleven year period. They are also known for having high-profile moderators and this one was no different as we took it back the OG of the franchise – Jon Favreau, complete with cue card questions. “I’ve been involved with the MCU, as most of you know, since the Marvel Universe was a screaming toddler. And now it has grown into a big vast family. And I’m very proud. It’s a bit surreal.” With that he proceeds to welcome to the stage all of cast “post snap,” which inlcluded Danai Gurira, Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Scarlett Johannson, Kevin Feige, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Don Cheadle Mark Ruffalo, Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan, Brie Larsen, Chris Evans, and Jeremy Renner. All completely on stage with empty chairs representing those who turned to dust in Infinity War.
When asked about Ironman and Downey’s approach, Downey explained “…we had those many discussions in the high desert and shooting the film, I’m reminded now that I was talking a lot of smack saying wait until you see where this goes. But in the moment, I was just hoping day-to-day we were making good scenes and getting good stuff in the can. And the usual gobbledy gook. I just wanted to not drop the ball.”
Attention then shifted to the Russo Brothers. “This is I think a really unique experiment in movies, this grand mosaic. Depending on how you count it up, 11 franchises that have been interwoven into one big narrative. It’s a real sense of community sharing in these stories and believing in them. And I think with End Game, we get the opportunity to think to finish off one of the grandest experiments in movie history and bring it to, as Kevin said, an epic conclusion. So what we’re hoping for is that people feel satisfied with the conclusion,” Joe Russo emotionally shared with the audience hanging on every word hoping to grab a little preview slip of the tongue.
Of course, we can’t talk about the the MCU without mentioning Black Panther. Danai Gurira aka Okoye spoke to what makes her such a respected, inspirational character, “…what I love about her is that she is very unapologetic. She’s a traditionalist in the sense that she believes in the sovereignty of her nation. She doesn’t have rage issues. She loves her country. She loves her people and she’ll do whatever it takes to take care of what must be done. At the same time, there is a fierceness she has that kind of unapologetically also embraces her femininity. So, it’s been really fun to get to see her in all these different ways.
So, when you all get out there to embrace this final chapter in The Avengers franchise remember that it now involves some powerful female characters like Captain Marvel, Okoye, Valkyrie, Black Widow and many more that will open up and allow us to investigate a whole new side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
