13 Days of Halloween

Today is finally the day kids!!! Happy Halloween

So, it would only be appropriate to save this holiday’s namesake film to close out my “13 Days of Halloween” with John Carpenter’s “Halloween”!

The year is 1963: Halloween Night. Police are phoned only to discover that 15-year-old Judith Myers has been stabbed to death, by her 6 year-old brother, Michael. After being institutionalized for 15 years, Myers breaks out on the night before Halloween. No one knows, nor wants to find out, what will happen on October 31st 1978 besides Myers’ psychiatrist, Dr. Loomis. Loomis knows Michael is coming back to Haddonfield, but by the time the town realizes it…it’ll be too late for many people.

However, it is the screams of Jaime Lee Curtis that people remember most. Curtis, the daughter of Hollywood Legends Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. became iconic thanks to “Halloween”. It was her feature film debut.

Of course, I couldn’t let you go trick or treating without these trivia bits…

Due to its shoestring budget, the prop department had to use the cheapest $2 mask that they could find in the costume store: a Star Trek William Shatner mask. They later spray-painted the face white, teased out the hair, and reshaped the eye holes. Shatner admitted that for years he had no idea his likeness was used for this film. It was only during an interview that someone mentioned his mask was being used. He has since stated that he is honored by this gesture.
All of the actors wore their own clothes, since there was no money for a costume department. Jamie Lee Curtis went to J.C. Penney for Laurie Strode’s wardrobe. She spent less than one hundred dollars for the entire set. She shot the film while on hiatus from the sitcom Operation Petticoat.
