The Only Living Boy In New York Review by The Curvy Film Critic

Love stories can always be a little tricky, especially when there are more than two people involved.

The Only Living Boy in New York focuses on Thomas Webb, who after graduating college, is at a crossroads in his life.  Not quite sure if he wants to flee the country with his best friend/wanna be girlfriend Mimi  (Kiersey Clemons) or follow in the footsteps of his publishing tycoon father Ethan (Pierce Brosnan), Thomas finds himself on a journey of self-discovery.

Enter the alcoholic upstairs and sage neighbor played by Jeff Bridges and Thomas’ Mom Judith played by Cynthia Nixon, making up a cast of characters straight out of a Shakespearean novel.

Just like the lyrics of the Simon and Garfunkel song for which the film is titled (and yes played throughout the film) The Only Living Boy in New York is very entertaining, has strong, passionate, grounded performances by Pierce Brosnan, Kate Beckingsale, Cynthia Nixon, Turner and of course, Jeff Bridges make this film fun to watch.

Callum Turner plays young Thomas,  who’s coming from a life  of privilege and refuses live with his wealthy parents.  Having moved to a seedier section of New York rather than dwelling in  a hood that  his father’s publishing money would easily afford, Thomas often complains that “New York has lost its soul.”

All of that changes when Callum finds out his Dad’s having an affair, stalks his mistress only to encounter an affair of his own with this same woman.  I know…it’s a lot to absorb.  However, as nerdy and possibly non-sexy you would think Turner is, he 100% proves the audience wrong.

Without spoiling it for you, the film addresses multiple relationship issues that we all have experienced or knows someone who has had the same life lesson.  If nothing else, The Only Living Boy in New York will make you think.
