Matt Tyranauer Leaves No Page Left Unturned in The Reagans

In wake of our impending Presidential election, it is only natural  we take look back in history too figure out how we got into this current mess in the first place.  Ronald Reagan, by many accounts, is regarded as a shining star of the Republican Party.  However, that is not my recollection of that administration by any stretch of the imagination.  My memory recalls a man who was charming and handsome, yet clueless when it came to running a country.   An immensely great actor whose wife unmercifully had his back with the kind of loyalty that in unbridled at best.  Not to mention the rumors of dementia that ran rampant toward the final stages of his administration and life.

Well, Showtime reveals a side of Nancy and Ron with their four part docu-series – The Reagans exploring many surprisingly unexamined aspects of the Reagan Administration, and how Nancy’s image was in direct conflict with the power she would ultimately wield throughout her husband’s presidency.

Parts One and Two reveals how the potential  POTUS- in-training  harkens back to his days as the head of the Screen Actors Guild, how a failed acting career and finding the love of his life twice prepared him for the role of a lifetime presiding over the greatest nation on the globe.

Directed by Matt Tyrnauer, this fascinating docu-series is chock full of archival footage and shockingly revealing contemporary interviews (including former staffers and Reagan offspring) providing a unique perspective on how political tactics from ‘the 60s and ‘70s circle on around the peripheral  of our current national state of politics.

But, underneath all of that is a undying, unquestionable love of two human beings who epitomize what a relationship looks like under the most dire and pressurized of circumstances

Here’s hoping that by the time this airs, the conversation in America will have a more positive tone and not slipping back into old ideologies that serve no American citizen – especially those who are deemed as other.  And, now that curiosity has been peaked by The Reagans.  I, for one, willbe sure to tune in for all four episodes when it streams on Showtime November 15th.
