Greta Gerwig Pays Homage to Sacramento with Lady Bird

Greta Gerwig is one of my favorites.  Why?  She unapologetically takes her real life experiences and brings them to the silver screen.  It’s kinda like taking the best excerpts from your locked diary and putting it out there for all to see.  She did it with Mistress America  and masters it again with Lady Bird tackling the complicated relationships between mother, daughter, besties and young love during the most challenging year in a young life – senior year.

This film resonated with me for a variety of reasons,  Mostly because I could relate to Lady Bird on all counts.  My Mom is tough and critical of me at every turn, but loves me and has sacrificed her life for me to be able to live effortlessly in this moment.  She taught me how to take criticism and work it to my advantage instead of let it destroy my spirit or my world.

Having said that, in the title role, Saoirse Ronan is brilliantly relatable as an outspoken teen who navigates life and those in her world on her terms.  Laurie Metcalf hits the nail on the head as that Mom who just can’t admit she’s wrong, but loves harder than anyone. Beanie Feldstein as Lady Bird’s bestie has grit, chutzpah and just the right amount of empathy for the friend who picks her to the curb for the cool kids.

Already sweeping awards season in one category or another, Lady Bird will put a smile on your face and in your heart, as well as, teach you that being uniquely you is the best gift you can give to yourself.
