A Tale of Two Emmas Chat Creating Cruella

As if the behind the scene tea couldn’t get any hotter, here come Emma Stone and Emma Thompson talking all things Baroness and Estella/Cruella.  Just how dark did Disney go with this origin story?  “I think it’s definitely dark for a Disney movie. Maybe not for, like, a really intense kind of R-rated film, but yeah, it was darker than I’ve seen a Disney movie for a good long time, ” says The Baroness aka Emma Thompson.  Just what did if feel like to be a villain? “Oh, well, you know, I drew on the life, obviously. Um, I mean, I think if my husband were in the room, he’d say, no acting required, really.” (LAUGH) “I had such fun doing her…I spent decades playing what my mother used to call, “good women in frocks…now I got to play a really evil woman in frocks.”

Let’s discuss those frocks for a second shall we?  “I mean, they wore me,  is what really happened.  I had just the best, best time. Every time Em (Emma Stone) and I would come on set, we’d just look and  walk around each other, like we were sculptures or works of art or something, which we were.  I mean, it was in a way, everyone created the Baroness, and then I sort of stepped in and just said the words. [LAUGH].  It’s not fantastically comfortable at the center of the toothpaste tube, but our wonderful tailors and designers, Jenny Beavan have such a good time just pulling in the corset, tight-tightly enough so that bits of me would squish out of the top of the costume. Then, they’d push a bit back, squish it back down and pull in again. It was kind of cookery as well. [LAUGH]

Of course Stone’s favorite frack was also the ones I loved as well.  “My very, very favorite outfit was the dress I wear on the garbage truck.   There was a 40-foot train that wasn’t attached to the dress, because obviously I wouldn’t be able to move anywhere. So, they added it on at the last minute when I get onto the truck. There was also that insane skirt when I cover the car.  That was epic too. Trying to walk up onto a car and then cover an entire car with a flick of the skirt was just fantastic!!!  It was just that moment where you’re like, I am in a movie right now.” Yes, you were Emma Stone and a quite fantabulous one at that!

I’m telling you right now those  moments really are about as epic as they get on the silver screen and you’ll be able to peep it for yourself when Cruella his on Friday.
