Wow…I don’t know about you, but this year literally didn’t pick up film wise for me until a few months ago. Hidden Figures and Loving taught us several history lessons about how racist the State of Virginia could be, unlawful interracial love and groundbreaking women at NASA.
Women kicked serious butt in 2016 and diversity was at an all time high with films like Southside With You, Miles Ahead, Elle, 20th Century Women and Moonlight. I must be the only critic that didn’t fall head over heels in love with Manchester By The Sea, but loved young Lucas Hodges performance.
Not one to hold my tongue, my thoughts about 2016 were published by EURWeb about getting history lessons from Hollywood. So, as a proud member of AAFCA (African American Film Critics Association), you know I didn’t hold back. I know you are bursting at the seams to find out what I said, so here is the link…
AAFCA Members Speak: The crazy talented Carla Renata shares her thoughts about 2016 and looks ahead to 2017 in cinema! http://www.eurweb.com/2016/12/hollywood-become-catalyst-teaching-black-history/

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love a good documentary. It’s almost like going back to school for me without driving or dropping tuition. Any good documentary always informs educates and invokes some type of emotion.
With an election year and #BLM in full effect for 2016. These docs, in my opinion, were really exceptional.
Tie for 3rd Place –
Tied for 10th Place…
Nothing tickles me more than talking and singing animals. So, it should be no surprise that I fell in love with some Trolls, took a trip to Zootopia, discovered The Secret Life of Pets and got a few life lessons along the way from Moana and Kubo and The Two Strings. check out a little red carpet action and full reviews of my favorite animated flicks.
This Oscar race for 2017 is already starting to look a little predictable, but there is always a surprise or two down the road. Have a safe and fantabulous last day of 2016 and I will see you with even more movie madness in 2017!!!
Love Peace and Hairgrease Y’all!!!!
