As a self-proclaimed scaredy-cat of the horror film genre and with the Goosebumps movie opening, it is perfect timing to begin my 13 days of Halloween with R.L. Stine, Wes Craven and Stanley Kubrick’s “horror brother from another mother”…Stephen King.
Stephen King is regarded by many as the “King of Horror” as many of his books have been adapted to the silver screen. The term cult classic doesn’t really cover what The Shining is to American pop culture. Starring Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall and directed by Stanley Kubrick, The Shining is essentially a story about really, really, bad cabin fever in a haunted cabin.
Signing a contract, Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), a normal writer and former teacher agrees to take care of a hotel with a long, violent past which places everyone in the hotel in a very nervous situation. While Jack slowly gets more violent and angry of his life, his son, Danny (Danny Torrance), tries to use a special talent (the “Shining”) to warn the outsiders about whatever it is that’s going on in the hotel. Nevertheless, the movie spawned a dozen catchphrases, including “Heeeeere’s Johnny” and “Redrum! Redrum!”
With Shelly Duvall , Scatman Crothers and even an uncredited appearance by Vivian Kubrick (Stanley Kubrick’s daughter), The Shining is classic Stephen King. Take a look at the original trailer below…
